Govt plans tough anti-touting law
June 29, 2010
The city may soon get a stringent anti-touting law with the Delhi Government drafting a Bill to deal with touts harassing and duping tourists. Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta said the Government was considering making the legislation as police had been pushing for it vigorously in the wake of rising cases of violence and harassment of tourists by touts. Two Dutch women tourists were allegedly raped several times in last five months by two men posing as tourist guides who also robbed them of their money. The incident came to light last week.
“The proposed legislation will have stringent punishment. The police have also been demanding a tougher law to deal with touts,” said Mehta.
Another official said the process of drafting the Bill has started. He said the Delhi Police had approached the city Government almost one-and-a-half year back to bring the legislation ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
